"Simone Swims" is the first painting in my Olympic Heroes series.
This painting captures that moment of breath and tranquility in between
the strokes. It displays the indomitable spirit of the Olympic athlete and the fruits that training and discipline bring. To me, water has a dual nature. On one hand, it can be beautiful and feminine in its aesthetic and in its renewing/cleansing properties. It brings forth, and sustains life. On the other hand, it can be muscular and masculine in its awesome power and vastness. Water can bring danger to the unskilled human being. I chose Simone Manuel as a subject because by her presence in this elite competition, she dispels the myths and stereotypes around African-American's aversion to water and swimming.
